What is GST and How Is It Calculated in India?
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a destination-based, multi-stage indirect tax levied on the manufacture, sale, and consumption of goods and services throughout India. Replacing complex cascading taxes like VAT, Service Tax, and Excise Duty, GST simplifies compliance under unified slabs: 0%, 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%.
GST Calculation Formulas
Depending on whether the retail quote already includes tax or requires tax addition, GST is calculated using standard formulas:
GST Amount = (Base Price × GST Rate) / 100
Total Payable = Base Price + GST Amount
2. GST Inclusive (Extracting / Reverse GST from MRP):
Base Price = Total Price / (1 + (GST Rate / 100))
GST Amount = Total Price - Base Price
How to Calculate 18% GST (Example)
18% is the most common GST rate in India, applied across software services, electronics, professional fees, and consumer dining.
- Exclusive Example: If your consulting invoice is ₹10,000 + 18% GST:
GST Amount = (10,000 × 18) / 100 = ₹1,800.
For local supply, this splits into CGST ₹900 and SGST ₹900. Total Payable = ₹11,800. - Inclusive Example: If an electronic accessory retails at an MRP of ₹11,800 inclusive of 18% GST:
Base Net Amount = 11,800 / 1.18 = ₹10,000.
Embedded Tax = 11,800 - 10,000 = ₹1,800.
Difference Between CGST, SGST, and IGST
- CGST (Central GST): Collected by the Central Government on transactions occurring within a single state (Intra-state).
- SGST (State GST): Collected by the State Government on intra-state transactions alongside CGST.
- IGST (Integrated GST): Levied on commercial transactions that cross state borders (Inter-state) or import/export supplies, collected directly by the Central Government.
