What is EXIF Metadata and Why Should You Strip It?
Whenever you take a photograph using a smartphone (iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel) or a DSLR camera, the device automatically records extensive background information known as Exchangeable Image File Format (EXIF).
While EXIF is useful for photographers archiving camera exposure settings, it also carries serious privacy risks when shared publicly on forums, classified ads, social media, or blogs:
- Exact Home Geolocation: Smartphones embed GPS latitude and longitude accurate to within 3 meters. Sharing photos of pets, kids, or personal possessions can expose your home or work address to stalkers.
- Unique Device Identifiers: Camera serial numbers and device hardware identifiers can be correlated across websites to track individual photographers.
- Precise Timestamps: EXIF records the exact second a photo was snapped, exposing daily travel routines and work patterns.
