Metric vs. Imperial Measurement Systems
Throughout history, cultures developed distinct measurement systems. Today, two major frameworks prevail: the International System of Units (SI / Metric System) used globally and in science, and the Imperial/US Customary System primarily used in the United States.
Common Conversion Reference Factors
- Length: 1 meter = 3.28084 feet = 39.3701 inches = 1.09361 yards. 1 kilometer = 0.621371 miles.
- Mass: 1 kilogram = 2.20462 pounds. 1 pound = 16 ounces = 453.592 grams.
- Temperature: \((^\circ\text{F} - 32) \times \frac{5}{9} = ^\circ\text{C}\). Absolute zero is 0 Kelvin (\(-273.15^\circ\text{C}\)).
- Digital Storage: 1 Kilobyte (KB) = 1,024 Bytes. 1 Megabyte (MB) = 1,024 KB. 1 Gigabyte (GB) = 1,024 MB. 1 Terabyte (TB) = 1,024 GB.
Frequently Asked Questions
Unlike length or mass where zero means zero quantity (a ratio scale), Celsius and Fahrenheit are interval scales with different arbitrary zero points (the freezing point of water is 0°C but 32°F). Hence, conversion requires an offset of 32 in addition to scaling by 9/5.
Our digital storage conversion uses the standard computing binary multiplier of 1,024 (IEC standard: 1 KiB = 1,024 B).
