How the 1-Minute WPM Test Measures Productivity
The 60-second Words Per Minute test is the international standard used by employment agencies, government civil service exams, software development bootcamps, and universities. By testing for exactly one minute, the test measures your sustained typing velocity while accounting for cognitive text processing and finger repositioning.
WPM Formulas Explained
Two distinct WPM metrics exist:
- Gross Words Per Minute (GWPM):
(Total Keystrokes / 5) / 1.0. It represents the raw physical frequency of your keyboard interaction. - Net Words Per Minute (NWPM):
Gross WPM - (Errors / 1.0). This is the official score displayed above. If you type 80 words in one minute but make 4 uncorrected errors, your true Net score is 76 WPM.
